For the first time in several years, I shall be celebrating a European Christmas. People ask me what the Christmas traditions are in rural Africa. There aren't any really -- or should I say, there is only one, which involves the hapless Christmas sheep. Traditions are things one passes down, and for that one needs things to pass down -- and there aren't any. In fact a major Christmas tradition in Europe -- gift-giving -- runs counter to much African culture, particularly as regards children. OBSERVATION: In the cities, there are indeed Christmas traditions -- in particular, churchgoing on Christmas day.
