AIDS Deaths

I previously noted on this blog that an estimated one in ten people under my ministry were HIV positive, judging by my personal knowledge of their status. But what has long puzzled me is the high mortality rate. I have seen so many die. Today I asked a doctor and an AIDS NGO staffer why. The AIDS NGO staffer said that HIV, when one has it, is now less of a hazard over a lifetime than diabetes. The doctor said that various factors contribute to the failure of ARVs in Africa: the unavailability of ARVs, the inconsistent use of ARVs (resistance to ARVs), ARV intolerance, opportunistic infections, and so on. OBSERVATION: A mother told me recently that her daughter was "gedaan" (at an end) through AIDS. This prompted the question.
