This is a photo of the Ladismith Synagogue, which lies at the centre of the Little Karoo semi-desert. But with an exodus of Jewish people from the Little Karoo -- mostly traders in ostrich feathers -- the synagogue closed. It was built around 1913, in a Lithuanian style. It has round-headed lancet windows, and a collonaded portico on the side. A steel ceiling is adorned with an enamel Star of David. Isodore Joel Mann, a businessman and later mayor of the town, had the synagogue built from his own private funds.
