I met today with a young Black writer from Mamelodi. I agreed to mentor him for one year, to develop him as a writer and thinker. Typically, such a relationship is contractual. So it is in this case, although it will be unremunerative, to use an old-fashioned word. My next task is to write up the contract. OBSERVATION: I received postgraduate training in mentoring from world leaders in the field, Bobby Clinton and Shelley Trebesch. There's a good rundown of what formal mentoring is at The Ten Commandments of Mentoring. But something I feel strongly about: mentoring should not be conflated with evangelism or discipleship, which are primarily a "vertical" relationship, not a horizontal one.
