I once called city ministry trauma-hopping. That is, one enters one deeply traumatic situation after another. Yet it seems a great privilege to be welcomed into people’s lives at their "deepest" moments, to talk to them and pray with them -- and it seems to me that the looks on their faces and their gestures are more interesting than any LIFE magazine pictures. OBSERVATION: It seems to me that a home may be filled with an invisible fog called
trauma, and you walk into it, and breathe it, and absorb it. That affects me a lot. I can’t do too much of it at once.
