There is a saying here, among Christians, about those in the West: "They haven't fallen off the bottom rung." That is, they haven't ever come to their lowest or most needy point -- whereas in Africa, far more people have. This is thought to be one of the primary reasons why Westerners think they can do without God, where many in Africa hope and trust in Him. OBSERVATION: I think this is true -- and that "falling off the bottom rung" leaves no option bust to hope and trust in God.
