What has been happening in the Roman Catholic Church on a grand scale happens also in the local Church, on the smallest scale. It is about scandal, generally speaking -- but it is also about Church discipline. Afrikaans speakers have a single word for it:
tug. Scandal is one thing, but let Church discipline slip along with it, and you get what one sees in the graph on the right, namely decline. The
Friendly Atheist (I do read such things) puts it down above all to "all those child abuse scandals".
OBSERVATION: Interestingly, the Protestant Church has been picking up the slack.
