My father, before he became a minister, was an illusionist, among other things. He was renowned, too, for inventing illusions. In ministry, though, his illusions were sparse -- and all the more keenly anticipated for it. At a Church fĂȘte one year, he persuaded the office secretary (Nora Sulston) to do the head-on-a-plate illusion -- opening some curtains to reveal her head on a table -- with (apparently) nothing underneath it. OBSERVATION: When the illusion is well done, and people don't know how it is done, it can be quite stunning. I saw him building it, so I know it inside out.
