First Day At School

I happen to have this photo to hand -- my first day of school. Also in the picture are my sister and my father -- then head of the Gilbert Islands Protestant Church. OBSERVATION: In the background is the mission ship the John Williams VII. One sees that South Tarawa road, in the background, was still untarred. Locals wove baskets for me and my sister, as "suitcases" for school. My mother sewed our school uniforms, and hand-stitched the "RS" emblems on them (Rurubao School). We went to school barefoot, as one sees.
