An issue that I deal with in my metaphysic (or total philosophy) is whether we live in a closed universe or not. A closed universe is one that is completely governed by rules. Imagine a game of chess. A careful observer reports that the entire game is governed by the strictest of rules. Yet strangely, each game has a different outcome. There is something else going on here -- which is of course the players. So too with the universe. In theory, the universe is governed by the strictest of rules, which is the laws of science as best we know them. But here too, there is something else going on. Stephen Hawking noted that we are at a loss to explain why the universe is not in a state of complete disorder at all times. I would add: in a state of complete, homogeneous order. Instead, we find complexity. OBSERVATION: This need not refer to the awesome complexity of nature's structures. My own observation is as basic as it gets: there is complexity. Why?
