My late wife Mirjam introduced New Year's Eve services in my city ministry -- and as an ordained minister, led them herself. These were small services with a faithful following each year. In South Africa as a whole, New Year's Eve is far more important than Christmas. Large Church services are held into the morning of January the 1st -- and packed out services in farm labourers' homes. OBSERVATION: Yet these tend to be, in my view, moralistic. The importance of faith is not well understood -- an emphasis which is much needed in a society in turmoil.
