No Cookies

Don't try this at home. Running Linux Xubuntu, I sought to discover whether the deletion of all cookies from my computer would make it slicker. But this deleted some things I didn't expect. Here are the results:
• Power up: the same amount of time
• Browser: 60% faster (Firefox)
• News site: 60% slower (BBC)
• Word processor: 20% faster (Writer)
OBSERVATION: The verdict: the surprise was calling up Writer (faster). It seemed no surprise that Firefox came up faster. And the BBC actually slowed down. The "received wisdom" is that deleting cookies generally speeds up Internet performance, but in some cases slows it down. Not much is learnt. [I since corrected the BBC figure.]
