Sickness in the Past

One forgets that there was a time, not that long ago, when most sicknesses were not really curable or even treatable. This is reflected in my older ministers' manuals. For instance, in my old Congregational manual, services for the sick are grouped with services for the dead. The emphasis is on the road of suffering, God's power to alleviate sickness, and healing that comes by the angel of death. And so on. OBSERVATION: Today things have changed very much. Prayers are for healing. People speak little of the dangers of sickness, they expect healing, and are outraged, even, when it doesn't happen.
