One of my professors had a particular dislike for the musician John Cage. John Cage performed random music. But at the same time, he loved to pick mushrooms. However, he couldn't pick mushrooms at random. He said, "I became aware that if I approached mushrooms in the same spirit as my chance operations, I would die shortly." Anyway, Cage composed one piece of music which lasts 639 years. The BBC reported on it this morning: As Slow as Possible. OBSERVATION: The theological or philosophical point is that people cannot really live with chance or randomness.
