Microphones: How Far?
At what distances can microphones pick up voices? It's one or two metres for a shotgun microphone. 10 metres for a Sound Shark. It isn’t easy to find details "out there". My latest design, using cheap, well-chosen parts, picks up a conversation at full amplitude at 100 metres, without a dish, which is the length of a rugby pitch. OBSERVATION: But when one pushes microphones to the limit, one comes up against internal noise and external noise. A common example of external noise is leaves rustling in the breeze. Another example, which I discovered just this month: cicadas.
