I studied mentoring under the celebrated Dr. Robert J. Clinton. He defined mentoring -- which includes "the counselling function" -- as "essentially a relational power transfer". This is very different to my own model of counselling, which is to transfer people to God -- rather than transfer something from one person to another. In a sense, the mentor or counsellor has nothing with which to empower someone. This is not to say that Dr. Clinton's mentoring excludes this divine aspect, only it would not seem to be central. The late Dr. George N. Malek, a psychologist and theologian wrote, "Ministry is not a therapeutic encounter, but the encounter with the Holy."
