No Regrets

I counselled an old man whose wife was terminally ill at home. As is the case in many such situations, this can be extremely demanding. He didn't know, he said, whether he could carry on to the end. Should he have her transferred to a hospital or hospice? But she wanted to die at home. I said, "If it doesn't turn out to be impossible, carry on." Shortly after she died, he pulled his car over next to me in the street and shouted, "You were right! I'll never regret what I did!" OBSERVATION: But it is a grace, if one can do that. It can be impossible.
