Recently I blogged about counselling in Africa -- and gave an example how far it may be from Western counselling. Here is another example. A handsome young man came to see me. He was deeply troubled that his sister had had a miscarriage. He himself had caused this by frowning when a chicken was slaughtered at the wedding. Now he was in disgrace with his family. I explained to him that God was all-powerful, and that his sister could not have had the miscarriage without God's permission. I told him that he need not fear a family’s disgrace, but that what counted was to know the grace of God. OBSERVATION: It was a good session. Notice that it was not necessary to bring Western presuppositions into the counselling: "That's just superstition."
