In my early ministry, a young wife and mother had colon cancer. Her condition had seriously deteriorated, but she vowed that she would get well -- because she had faith. There were others, too, who spoke “the word of faith” over her. I said to her: “God can heal you, if He so wills, but you need to say with Christ: ‘Your will be done, not mine.’” She screamed: “Get out! Get out! Get out!” I had just suggested that she might not get well. There was nothing to be done but to leave. The day before she died, she whispered to her mother: “Please apologise to Rev. Scarborough on my behalf.” Her mother brought me the message, describing the deathbed scene. OBSERVATION: It is a theology that I often encounter, and it can have tragic consequences. God is sovereign. One can’t dictate to God, or tell Him how He should respond to faith or prayers. However, God’s love is sure.
