The regular amounts that are required to keep a Church going are relatively small. Say, if 100 people each pledge R100 a Sunday, this amounts to more than half a million rands in a year. R100 a Sunday is about 5% of an unskilled labourer's salary here, and less than 1% of a professional's. Now here is something I have found to be culturally important. For some churchgoers, that R100 is optional -- of course it is optional. Yet for others -- this is customary in parts -- this is what one is assigned, and if one doesn't have the money, one must make it. OBSERVATION: If the Church announces, therefore, "If you could give R100 a Sunday, we would have no more worries," one may have two sets of interpretations. In multicultural congregations, therefore, one may need to spell out what is intended.
