It seems to me that there are two kinds of top flight literary agents. There are those who look the part. They have the image, the team, the spotlight, the accolades (and so on). Then there are the those who, by all accounts, are reputable and capable -- some of them among the best in the world -- but they don't care about all that. They just want the manuscript, it's about the manuscript (or part of it). OBSERVATION: Before I even approach a literary agent, I check their credentials -- and double-check them -- even seeking opinion. It's a difficult decision, though, with such vast differences between them. At the moment, a New York literary agent has requested my material -- apparently of the second kind. I originally had them down for later, for that reason: they seemed to be the right agent for my work, and not a blemish on their reputation -- but of the more reclusive kind.
