The method of deconstruction can be very useful. It seeks contradictions (sometimes subtle contradictions) within a text, to reveal things which would not easily be uncovered otherwise. I used the method for one of my Master's theses. Here is a classic example. In a well known Christian leadership book, the author emphasises that, once one has been ordained to Christian ministry, “we want your vow that you will stick to it”. He adds: “I want to reiterate ... our responsibility is to keep on keeping on -- and on -- and on.” But look at the back cover, and it states that the author is no longer in Christian ministry. Read the Preface, and it states that he is now teaching in seminary. OBSERVATION: The task is then to interpret. Why was all the determination in the world not enough? Did the book miss something?
