Getting to the Core of It

I blogged yesterday about getting to the bottom of things in counselling. Here is a problem I did not get to the bottom of, until the end of the day. I counselled a young woman who had been admitted to a number of psychiatric wards. She was suicidal, among other things. I gave her spiritual and pastoral counsel, yet it seemed that, in some important way, there was no breakthrough. It all counted in the end – but not as I expected. The counselling was long over -- then one day she reappeared. She sat down in front of me with her head down, and said only, “I want you to understand. I had an abortion.” OBSERVATION: The earlier counselling had not been in vain. She came to trust me, and so she came back. From my experience in ministry, abortion may be legal, but it is not psychologically or spiritually safe. That can easily deceive.
